The pontifical intervention of the Institute of the Incarnate Word (IVE) has just entered a particularly significant phase. The Pontifical Delegate, Msgr. Jos\u00e9 Antonio Satu\u00e9, Bishop of Malaga, has decided to replace the official communication infrastructure of the Institute. <\/p>\n\n

The old ive.org site is no longer the official website of the IVE<\/strong>. In its place, the Delegate has created verboencarnado.org<\/strong>, which becomes, in his own words, the “only official website”<\/strong> of the Institute. <\/p>\n\n

At the same time, the old @ive.org<\/strong> accounts will be replaced by new @verboencarnado.org<\/strong> addresses, using Google technology (Gmail) and with the technical intervention of the computer scientist of the Diocese of Malaga.<\/p>\n\n

We are not, therefore, facing a simple change of ownership.<\/p>\n\n

The pontifical authority is creating a communications infrastructure that is no longer technically dependent on the internal structure of the IVE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

And the official explanation of why it has been necessary to do so is extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It would be irresponsible”<\/h2>\n\n

In an official communication sent to all the members of the Institute, Msgr. Satu\u00e9 explains: <\/p>\n\n

\n

“We have been forced to create this new page, given that, after consulting the provincials and the councilors of the General Government, it has not been possible to know who administers www.ive.org<\/a> or the emails ending in @ive.org.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

And he adds:<\/p>\n\n

\n

“It would be irresponsible to maintain as one’s own a page that is considered official and some corporate emails, without knowing who their administrators are.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

It is advisable to read carefully what this document says \u2013 and what it does not say \u2013 .<\/p>\n\n

The fact that is documented is that the Pontifical Delegate claims to have consulted the provincials and the councillors of the General Government and that, as a result of these consultations, he was unable to determine who administered the official website and emails of the Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

This does not prove that these people did not know who administered them.<\/p>\n\n

And, at least in the case of the website, this blog has information that forces us to ask a much more serious question.<\/p>\n\n

The webmaster was not a stranger<\/h2>\n\n

The administrator of ive.org<\/strong> was not, for those who knew the inner workings of the Institute, a mysterious figure impossible to identify.<\/p>\n\n

Fr. Pablo R., IVE, along with a group of priests and seminarians, was in charge of the administration of the website.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Therefore, the relevant question is not necessarily:<\/p>\n\n

“Why didn’t anyone know who ran the web?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The question is another:<\/p>\n\n

“Why didn’t the Pontifical Delegate get them to tell him who was administering it?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The difference is fundamental.<\/p>\n\n

We do not know the individual answers provided by each provincial or each councilor. Nor can we say, without additional evidence, what exactly each of the people consulted knew. <\/p>\n\n

But if among those who were consulted there were people who knew the identity of the administrator and decided not to communicate it to the Pontifical Delegate, we would no longer be facing a problem of computer disorganization.<\/p>\n\n

We would be facing a much more serious problem:<\/p>\n\n

\n

the withholding of information from the authority entrusted by the Holy See with governing the Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

The historic “ive.org” officially ceases to represent the Institute<\/h2>\n\n

Msgr. Satu\u00e9’s response was not to create an alternative page and hope that it will gradually replace the previous one. <\/p>\n\n

He has made a much clearer decision.<\/p>\n\n

Its communication establishes:<\/p>\n\n

\n

“As of this date, www.verboencarnado.org<\/a> is our only official website.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

And he adds that the other pages:<\/p>\n\n

\n

“They should not be used as a reference in the publications (websites and social networks included) of the provinces and houses of the Institute.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

This represents an institutional rupture with ive.org<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The provinces and houses of the IVE do not simply receive the recommendation to preferentially use the new domain. They are ordered to stop using the other pages as institutional references. <\/p>\n\n

The consequence is clear:<\/p>\n\n

verboencarnado.org becomes the only web channel recognized by the authority that currently governs the Institute.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The problem is even more serious with email<\/h2>\n\n

Msgr. Satu\u00e9’s communication reveals that the problem did not only affect the website. <\/p>\n\n

It expressly includes corporate emails ending in:<\/p>\n\n

@ive.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

According to the Pontifical Delegate, he was also unable to determine who administered those accounts.<\/p>\n\n

And this has considerably more delicate implications than managing a website.<\/p>\n\n

A website controls the public communication of an institution.<\/p>\n\n

A mail server can affect your private communications<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

For this reason, the solution adopted is particularly significant.<\/p>\n\n

The Institute will begin using new accounts:<\/p>\n\n

@verboencarnado.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The instructions for its use will be sent by the computer scientist of the Diocese of Malaga<\/strong>, that is, from a structure external to the IVE and institutionally linked to the bishop himself who acts as Pontifical Delegate.<\/p>\n\n

The accounts will be powered by Google (Gmail).<\/p>\n\n

Msgr. Satu\u00e9 expressly explains that the new system will make it possible to guarantee: <\/p>\n\n

\n

“A functional, secure email with the maximum guarantees of privacy for each of the users”.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

The word privacy<\/strong> is fundamental here.<\/p>\n\n

Whoever manages the mail has power<\/h2>\n\n

To understand the importance of this decision, you need to remember how a corporate email infrastructure works.<\/p>\n\n

Whoever has administrative privileges can, depending on the technology and configuration used, manage accounts, modify certain configurations, set rules or redirects and access information that normal users cannot control.<\/p>\n\n

That is why there is an obvious structural conflict if the members of an intervened institution have to use servers administered by that same institution to communicate confidentially with the authorities in charge of intervening it.<\/p>\n\n

Let us imagine that a religious needs to inform the Pontifical Delegate about the conduct of a superior.<\/p>\n\n

It is not enough for him to trust Bishop Satu\u00e9. <\/p>\n\n

You also have to rely on the canal used to reach Monsignor Satu\u00e9 <\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

If that channel is managed by people belonging to the same structure about which you want to report, there is an obvious vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n

Creating @verboencarnado.org<\/strong> removes that dependency.<\/p>\n\n

Interception of communications is not an abstract hypothesis<\/h2>\n\n

In the case of the IVE, moreover, the concern for the administrative control of communications is not for this blog a mere computer speculation.<\/p>\n\n

Since the time of Commissioner Rico , communications were intercepted and controlled<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

This does not mean that we can say that the current administrators of @ive.org<\/strong> will be intercepting emails in 2026.<\/p>\n\n

We do not have, at the moment, specific evidence that would allow us to make such a statement about the current situation.<\/p>\n\n

But the historical precedent shows that the possibility of using administrative privileges to control communications is not a purely theoretical hypothesis in the history of the Institute<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

And this helps to understand the importance of the decision taken by the Pontifical Delegate.<\/p>\n\n

That the IVE cannot “tap” the Delegate’s emails<\/h2>\n\n

The new architecture introduces a fundamental technical separation.<\/p>\n\n

If the @verboencarnado.org<\/strong> accounts are administered from outside the structure of the Institute, the computer administrators of the IVE cease to control the system used by the Pontifical Delegate and his collaborators.<\/p>\n\n

Simply put:<\/p>\n\n

the IVE can no longer “tap” the Delegate’s emails using administrative privileges on its own corporate system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

This is not to say that he was currently doing so.<\/p>\n\n

It means something more elementary: the possibility of doing so through administrative control of the IVE’s infrastructure is eliminated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

The difference is important.<\/p>\n\n

An independent governance structure also needs independent communications.<\/p>\n\n

The pontifical authority cannot depend for its confidential communications on systems whose administrator it does not even claim to be able to identify.<\/p>\n\n

Security for those who want to talk to Roma<\/h2>\n\n

The issue also affects the members of the Institute.<\/p>\n\n

A priest, seminarian or religious who wishes to communicate directly with the Pontifical Delegate must be able to do so without asking whether his provincial superior, an internal administrator or another person linked to the structure of the Institute has the technical capacity to know, redirect or control such communication.<\/p>\n\n

Confidentiality has two components.<\/p>\n\n

The first is human:<\/p>\n\n

Do I trust the person I’m writing to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The second is technical:<\/p>\n\n

Do I trust the system I’m sending the message through?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The creation of @verboencarnado.org<\/strong> aims to solve precisely the second problem.<\/p>\n\n

The person can communicate with the pontifical authority using an infrastructure whose administration no longer depends on the internal authorities of the IVE.<\/p>\n\n

In the context of an intervention, that is not a computer detail.<\/p>\n\n

It is a condition for true freedom of communication.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Web and mail are part of the same problem<\/h2>\n\n

Taken together, the two decisions take on even greater significance.<\/p>\n\n

On the one hand:<\/p>\n\n

ive.org is no longer the official website.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

On the other:<\/p>\n\n

@ive.org is no longer the corporate infrastructure on which institutional communication will be built.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In their place appear:<\/p>\n\n

verboencarnado.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

y<\/p>\n\n

@verboencarnado.org<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

The first allows the pontifical authority to directly control public communication.<\/p>\n\n

The second allows for private communications whose technical administration is outside the internal structure of the Institute.<\/p>\n\n

They do not seem to be two independent decisions.<\/p>\n\n

There are two answers to the same problem:<\/p>\n\n

How can an institution be effectively governed by an authority that does not control\u2014and claims not even to be able to identify who controls\u2014its main channels of communication?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Msgr. Satu\u00e9’s response was extraordinarily pragmatic. <\/p>\n\n

If you can’t guarantee control of your existing infrastructure, create a new one.<\/p>\n\n

A question of effective governance<\/h2>\n\n

All this highlights a fundamental distinction.<\/p>\n\n

It is one thing to legally possess authority.<\/p>\n\n

Another is to have the necessary means to exercise it.<\/p>\n\n

Rome can appoint a Papal Delegate and confer on him very broad faculties. But if the intervened structure retains effective control over the channels through which information and communications circulate, a considerable part of the real power remains beyond the reach of the intervener. <\/p>\n\n

Effective intervention requires more than just decrees.<\/p>\n\n

It requires being able to receive information.<\/p>\n\n

It requires being able to communicate directly with members.<\/p>\n\n

It requires being able to publish decisions without intermediaries.<\/p>\n\n

And it requires guaranteeing that those who want to address the pontifical authority confidentially can do so without going through systems administered by the very people they eventually want to report on.<\/p>\n\n

That is precisely what the new infrastructure is beginning to provide.<\/p>\n\n

An unprecedented measure?<\/h2>\n\n

It is advisable to maintain historical prudence.<\/p>\n\n

Pontifical interventions by congregations, associations and religious movements are not new. Rome has directly assumed the government of religious institutions on numerous occasions. <\/p>\n\n

What deserves specific investigation is the combination we are looking at here.<\/p>\n\n

It is not simply a question of the appointment of a Pontifical Delegate.<\/p>\n\n

We are dealing with a pontifical authority that claims to have consulted the highest internal officials without being able to determine who manages the official digital infrastructure of the institution.<\/p>\n\n

As a result:<\/p>\n\n

    \n
  • disavows the old website;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • declares a new domain as the only official website;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • it orders provinces and houses to abandon the old references;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • replaces corporate accounts;<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  • and places the new mail infrastructure under a technical administration external to the Institute.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n

    The historical question should therefore be formulated precisely:<\/p>\n\n

    Are there precedents for a pontifical intervention in which it was necessary to disavow the official digital infrastructure of an institute and simultaneously create new web and mail channels administered outside the institution itself to guarantee its control, security and privacy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    If there are precedents, they will have to be documented.<\/p>\n\n

    If they do not exist, we will be facing a truly exceptional measure in the contemporary history of pontifical interventions.<\/p>\n\n

    Much more than a new website<\/h2>\n\n

    It would be easy to enter verboencarnado.org<\/strong>, look at a still simple page and think that we are simply facing a change of website.<\/p>\n\n

    That would be to lose sight of the essential.<\/p>\n\n

    What is really important is why that page exists<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

    It exists because the Pontifical Delegate affirms that, after consulting provincials and general councilors, he was unable to determine who administered the website and the existing official emails.<\/p>\n\n

    It exists because it considered it “irresponsible” to continue depending on that infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n

    It exists because it decided to withdraw ive.org<\/strong> its status as an official reference.<\/p>\n\n

    And it is accompanied by a new mail system, technically managed outside the IVE, whose declared objective is to provide security and the “maximum guarantees of privacy”.<\/p>\n\n

    The pontifical intervention is thus reaching one of the fundamental sources of power within any modern organization:<\/p>\n\n

    the control of information and communications.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

    Rome had already juridically assumed the government of the Institute of the Incarnate Word.<\/p>\n\n

    Now it is also building the necessary instruments to exercise that government without depending on the communication structures controlled from within the Institute itself<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n
